Survivor Stories
Healing is Possible.
We are living proof. Our stories, in their many forms, show the infinite shapes and possibilities of healing.
These stories can help us slow down and make meaning of our own experiences. They might just move us to raise our own voices, to reach toward each other, and create lasting change in the
world together.
You are not alone. We hope you find community here. And when you’re ready, we’d love to hear from you.
Take a Moment
Before exploring the collection, make sure these stories—which are aching, angry, and important—are what you need today. If not, that’s okay. They’ll be right here, waiting for you, whenever you’re ready.
A Word Before Reading
Stories help us heal. They hold power for both reader and storyteller. Reading others’ stories can help us understand our experiences. Telling our stories can bring relief, connection and even joy. But this is not a place for toxic positivity. No one has to minimize their pain to comfort others.
Survivor stories can be triggering.
Like our Code of Conduct says: We all have a right to tell our story the way we need to. We don’t ever want to censor survivors. So, for example, while we don’t tolerate racism, a victim of racist violence has every right to share what they’ve lived through—with trigger warnings, of course.
You are responsible for taking care of yourself.
The internet can be an unkind place, especially for survivors. We can offer support, but we cannot physically take care of you if you get triggered. We provide tips and techniques for self-regulation, as well as links to helpful resources—we hope you will use them as needed.
If you are feeling overwhelmed or triggered, please be kind to yourself.
Take a break. Hit the Emergency Escape button. Shut down your browser. Seek out known comforts and supports.
Thank you for taking good care of you. We need you here. Healing happens in community.
